Over the past semester there has been a significant change in faculty awareness and participation regarding our college and the direction administration has taken over the past years.
We have received contact information and promises of support from a majority of faculty most of whom participate in our off campus email list.
In my position as Communications Officer, I have had the opportunity to talk to dozens of faculty one on one and in small group settings. I have attended many meetings and can confidently say that there is an overwhelming feeling that something must be done to turn the tide of administrative bloat and focus once again on a quality student experience. Unity is the key to success and participation in these activities sends a clear message to our Board of Trustees as was demonstrated December 14 , 2010 at the BOT meeting and the faculty decompression.
Let’s keep the momentum going. Talk to fellow faculty. Join us whenever you can.

The Invisible Faculty Layoffs
There is talk of faculty not bearing their share of cuts. The District has neglected to consider the number of full time equivalent faculty (FTEF) that have already lost their jobs. The CHI editorial published in the Press Telegram (4/15) talked about adjunct faculty losing 50-100% of their income. One must consider that after, in many cases, they have provided decades of service to our college community they are cast off.
Cut classes are the "invisible" layoffs. Every 5 lecture classes cut from the schedule represent one full-time faculty layoff. Truth be known, the college HAS been doing layoffs and the only people that have lost their jobs are faculty directly serving students.
The calculated number of FTEF can be found at: http://ie.lbcc.edu/CPC_CSBR.cfm
- From Fall 2008 to Fall 2009: there was a reduction of 65.4962 FTEF;
a decrease of 10.83%. - From Spring 2009 to Spring 2010: there was another reduction of 64.2841 FTEF;
a decrease of 10.54% - From Summer 2008 to Summer 2009: again, a reduction of 14.1795 FTEF;
a decrease of 9.95%
65 FTEF x 5 classes = 325 classes
The most a part-time faculty member usually teaches is 3 classes. 325 classes ÷ 3 classes per adjunct faculty member = at least 108 adjunct faculty members already have been laid off. Another place on the LBCC web site indicates that in the spring of 2009 there were 634 part-time faculty members. From Spring 2009 to Spring 2010 17% of the adjunct faculty were laid off.
- The District euphemism for lay-offs is "Schedule Reductions".
- The District euphemism for salary cuts is "Fixed Cost reductions".
- District management falls into neither category.
Despite these draconian cuts to the primary educational mission of the college, not one member of the "management team" has lost their job in the pursuit of fiscal responsibility.
