Hello Faculty,

As we begin the Spring 2011 semester let us reflect on the fall 2010 semester. Negotiations were very interesting. The district wants more of our salary and benefits. Many colleges are not taking any furloughs or asking faculty for salary reductions temporary or permanent. The district wants to control the number of faculty that go on sabbatical if at all. While asking faculty for salary reductions the district decided to hire 15 new faculty. Not that we do not need more faculty, this is not the time to hire them. The superintendent/President has received a contract that now has his STRS employee contribution paid for by the district. Perhaps CCA should negotiate this for all faculty. This would be great savings for faculty. I almost forgot about the tentative agreement that was negotiated and ultimately voted down by the majority of CCA membership.

WOW! What a busy semester. Here we are January 2011! CCA is getting ready for Mediation with the district. Phone calls have been made over the past weeks to get a pulse of what the faculty want during this process. CCA is no longer negotiating but trying to reach a settlement that a majority of members can support.

I sent out an email reminding faculty to not exceed the enrollment cap this semester. Several faculty are not supportive of this action. We need to remember that we educate adults that can vote. We need to use this process to educate students about the importance of voting and the control Sacramento has on the funding for all community colleges. First educate ourselves and then students. This education should take place every year.

Our attendance at the December Board of Trustee meeting was great. We filled the room beyond its capacity. The next BOT meeting is Tuesday, January 18, 2011 at 5pm, location to be announced..

Mediation is scheduled for Thursday, January 20, 2011. The eboard and the negotiating team will be meeting with the mediator and the district working towards an agreement.

We will continue to keep you informed as we work toward a contract our membership can support.

Thank you for your continued support.
